Ciliegi in fiore / Cherry Blossom Viewing

(For the English version, please scroll down)
Mal comune mezzo gaudio...

The earth under our feet might be rocking like a heavy metal band but the cherry trees upstairs don't seem to be intimidated. So even this year many people leave their safe shelter in order to admire all those white and pink flowers.
The day is perfectly sunny and warm, and for once in a while we too go out in full formation for a walk: the Boss - not wanting to attract too much attention - wearing a bright orange kimono; the Center-Forward follows, already bored and grumbling as they don't see the point of taking a walk; while I come last, guarding their back.
A simple walk along the placid river Onda can turn into a Napoli-style tragicomedy if you are not careful. There are so many things that can go wrong, and sure enough they go wrong, even because my tribe is a specialist in derailing even the most harmless outings.
Toni, as usual, opens the dances by declaring, after only ten minutes of walking, that his feet are full of blisters. From there it goes all the way down to hell, the highlights being:
- the Boss making me take hundreds of pictures of her in all possible positions
- the Boss who after each photo shouts to the assembled crowd that as a photographer I mighty suck
- Luca sprawling in the middle of the riverfront to take a picture of a half-rotten cherry blossom thus blocking the path to the irate walkers
- Toni declaring that if we don't go back NOW he's going to report us to the High Court for Human Rights
- the Boss cracking Toni on the head and threatening to send him to the temple (Japanese version of "boarding school")
Luckily we are not the only family happily "enjoying" the cherry blossoms. I notice with pleasure that all women are bullying their husbands because they seem not to take a single picture right. Company in distress makes sorrow less...

Tanti auguri a me / Happy Birthday to Me

(For the English version, please scroll down)

L’hai fatta anche a me...
Come dicevo, buon compleanno a me!

Epilogo
Speri Lei passera' presious calcolanocol [???]
Benvenuto a "BUFFET PASTI"
GODIAMO!

Si, tua sorella!...

I don’t believe in reincarnation, but everybody keeps saying I must have been Japanese in my previous life.
Shall I take it as a compliment?
It’s true that in Japan I’ve never had problems settling into my new life, and after only a few months here, every time I saw a foreigner on the subway I thought “ah, gaijin da” [hey, look at that alien!] as if I wasn’t one myself.
What does all this have to do with my birthday............................................. Oh yes, I had forgotten! I must be getting old...
Like many Japanese, I don’t care that much about birthdays. I can’t say I forget about mine, but I’m getting close. So I’m not overly disappointed when, every year, my Boss unfailingly forgets to wish me a happy birthday. Last year, for instance, she marveled at all the people calling me (of all people, even though I don’t even own a cell phone) but she didn’t even come close to the truth, the poor girl.
She is just like that: Every time I tell her “omedeto” for our wedding anniversary, she looks perplexed, with a blank stare like someone who has just woken up, and says “why, what day is it?”

17:55 update
I’ve just come home. My Boss had just made a cake: sponge cake, custard and whipped cream, with three biscuits and three chocolate “buttons” making a teddy bear face. “You know,” she quickly said, “tomorrow it’s my friend’s birthday, and I want to surprise her.”
You surprised me too...
As I said, happy birthday to me!

Epilogue
In the end we had dinner at Buffet Pasti, an all-you-can-eat "family restaurant" - as they call them here - where, for 1,500 yen, you are given two hours to stuff yourself with overcooked pasta, fake pizza, sweets, etc. I'd rather gloss over the unimpressive cuisine and focus instead on the striking piece of "poetry" hanging on every wall of the restaurant:
(loosely translated from broken Italian)
We have a special place!
We will make you be satisfied 100%
You hope you spend presious calcolanocol [???] Your the family, the girlfriend, the companion.
the vegetables, the meat, the seafood, the fruits, the rice, the bread, and the sweets
buffetto style and so Happy & healthy for YOU
Welcome to "BUFFET PASTI"
LET'S ENJOY!

Let's enjoy my ass!...
