Mal comune mezzo gaudio...
The earth under our feet might be rocking like a heavy metal band but the cherry trees upstairs don't seem to be intimidated. So even this year many people leave their safe shelter in order to admire all those white and pink flowers.
The day is perfectly sunny and warm, and for once in a while we too go out in full formation for a walk: the Boss - not wanting to attract too much attention - wearing a bright orange kimono; the Center-Forward follows, already bored and grumbling as they don't see the point of taking a walk; while I come last, guarding their back.
A simple walk along the placid river Onda can turn into a Napoli-style tragicomedy if you are not careful. There are so many things that can go wrong, and sure enough they go wrong, even because my tribe is a specialist in derailing even the most harmless outings.
Toni, as usual, opens the dances by declaring, after only ten minutes of walking, that his feet are full of blisters. From there it goes all the way down to hell, the highlights being:
- the Boss making me take hundreds of pictures of her in all possible positions
- the Boss who after each photo shouts to the assembled crowd that as a photographer I mighty suck
- Luca sprawling in the middle of the riverfront to take a picture of a half-rotten cherry blossom thus blocking the path to the irate walkers
- Toni declaring that if we don't go back NOW he's going to report us to the High Court for Human Rights
- the Boss cracking Toni on the head and threatening to send him to the temple (Japanese version of "boarding school")
Luckily we are not the only family happily "enjoying" the cherry blossoms. I notice with pleasure that all women are bullying their husbands because they seem not to take a single picture right. Company in distress makes sorrow less...

Come due gatti / Like Two Cats
(For the English version, please scroll down)
I don’t understand why people find cats so fascinating. These animals don’t give a shit about you unless they are hungry, thirsty, or have some other selfish need. I try all day to avoid such people (tough job, as they comprise most of us) so I don’t see why I should keep something like that in my house. Myself, I much prefer dogs: When they grow fond of someone they go over the top, follow them everywhere, drool all over them – just like me.
The Center-Forward, alas, has always showed a great love for cats. My mother has one, and my sister four (I know, she’s truly crazy) so every trip to Italy turns into a party for them – especially for Luca, the more naive of the two – bites and scratches notwithstanding.
After a thorough study of my two little monsters I’ve found the source of their illness: They are cats too.
- They come to me only in the most inopportune times (when I’m working, watching a porno video on the Internet, or soloing on air-guitar like Jimi Hendrix). Otherwise they go about their business as if I didn’t exist.
- If you try to touch Toni, he gets pissed off like Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront. Lately he’s starting scratching too.
- They hate any show of affection – especially the Boss’ truly revolting ones.
- They have a particularly developed hearing: If they call them, tell them to clean their room or set the table they don’t turn a hair. They don’t even react to earthquake, but as soon as they hear the muffled noise of tin foil they prick up their ears, start drooling and come running.

Compartimenti stagni / Airtight Compartments
(For the English version, please scroll down)
Or when you have very clear ideas on food. The Center-Forward follows a particular routine when attacking the dishes my Boss puts on the table: If, for instance, today we have meat loaf with rice and vegetables, they first finish the vegetables (it’s always better getting rid of the enemy first), then gobble up the rice, and last devote themselves to the meat. In other words, the two little monsters don’t like to mix things up. Repeatedly asked about their exotic eating habits, they just shrug the question off and say they like it this way. Toni is particularly hardcore about this. He would simply live off white rice and natto, and each and every time, unfailingly, he first sucks up all the natto and then eats the rice.
Cultural-culinary note: In this particular case I couldn’t agree more as mixing rice and natto would be akin to committing a massacre.
By the way, do you know what natto is?

Ricetta veloce per papa' distratti #1 / Quick Recipy for Absent-Minded Dads #1
(For the English version, please scroll down)
Ingredienti: conchigliette made in Japan, varie ed eventuali.
Preparazione:
- aggiungi i funghi tagliati a pezzi
Ingredients: conchigliette [seashell-like pasta] made in Japan, whatever.
Cooking:
- You realise it’s already lunch time and you have done nothing
- start boiling the water but you haven’t thought about the sauce. The only thing you are sure about is that NO, you do not want to make canned tuna and tomato sauce again
- after 2-3 minutes of useless mulling, you check the pasta and are horrified to see that there are no Japanese translations for “it holds up to cooking.” In one minute the pasta will be ready and you haven’t started preparing the sauce yet
- waste 30 more seconds wondering how it is possible that conchigliette – that bastard pasta that in Italy would cost you 10 euro worth of gas to cook – here are ready in three minutes
- open the fridge in a hurry and take out broccoli and shimeji mushrooms
- cut the broccoli and stir fry them in a little olive oil
- add the cut-up mushrooms
- add some soy sauce
- realise you mistakenly set the flame too high and the mushrooms are about to get burned
- add some more olive oil. 30 more seconds and it’s ready
Comments: The Center-Forward not only eats EVERYTHING without protest, but vigorously shakes his head in approval even though it’s ALL “evil veggies.”
PS I looked up the English for 'conchiglietta' and the online dictionary (must be made in UK or US - doesn't know the joys of pasta and only eats fish & chips or cheeseburgers) asked: "Maybe you were looking for 'coniglietta' [bunny girl]?" Yeah, that's it, send me one of them. I'll cover the shipping costs!

Il Centravanti / The Center-Forward
(For the English version, please scroll down)
- Luca e’ bonaccione; Toni e’ costantemente incazzato
This is the collective nickname a friend of mine hung on my two little monsters when I told him their names. Because you see, the big one is called Luca and the small one Toni. I’d like to point out that the monsters were born before Luca Toni became famous. Besides I’m not a big soccer/football fan so…
Their names were chosen 1) so that both the Italians and the Japanese could pronounce them easily, and 2) for lack of imagination. Actually Toni was supposed to be called Marina because the doctor had assured us that we were going to have a girl. Then Marina came out, but she had something more between her legs, and we didn’t really like Marino, so we had to scramble to find another name. Very poetic, isn’t it?
The two little monsters could not be more different:
- Luca is thick, like an Italian; Toni is thin, like Gandhi
- Luca is laidback; Toni is constantly pissed off
- Luca is messy like his mother; Toni is neat like his father
- Luca likes to compete, but is not interested in winning; Toni only competes when he has a chance to win
- Luca would even eat my old slippers; Toni would only eat Japanese food
- Luca still likes to hold hands when we walk; Toni is always tripping along three meters ahead or five meters behind us
